Everyone seems to have something different to say on the subject

Feeling a little squeamish about poling or aerial in a mask?

It can be hard to filter through all the drivel on the internet these days, especially when it comes to uncharted territory like living through a Pandemic. With a wealth of conflicting information out there, it can be overwhelming determining fact from fiction.

How do we know what’s safe and what’s not, or what’s real versus opinion?

At Ascendance, we believe science is a solid place to start. While scientific evidence does evolve and shift over time as new studies are completed, it does so in measured ways as more facts are carefully uncovered.

With that said, it’s time we set a rumor straight based on current science available to us: Despite what you may hear in various corners of the web, wearing a mask while exercising is generally quite safe! *

While most of us already know that mask wearing is an effective way to reduce the transmission of Covid-19, there has been some heated debate in the fitness community about the safety of wearing masks while exercising.

Some common questions pop up, such as:

  • “Will I get enough Oxygen?”

  • “Will I inhale too much Co2?”

  • “What if I overheat and pass out?”

And while these are valid initial concerns, the research this year suggests otherwise.

Here’s some studies and wisdom on the subject

Don’t just take our word for it.

“In a new study, published November 16, 2020 in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society, a team of American and Canadian researchers concluded that while sensations of dyspnea (difficulty breathing) might increase, there is little empirical evidence that wearing a face mask significantly diminishes lung function, even when worn during heavy exercise. The researchers came to their conclusions following a review of all known scientific literature published that examined the effects of various face masks and respiratory loading devices on physiological and perceptual responses to physical activity. These studies assessed multiple factors, such as work of breathing (the quantified energy expended to inhale and exhale), arterial blood gases, effects on muscle blood flow and fatigue, cardiac function and flow of blood to the brain.” **

And look no further than the CDC for more affirmation that for the majority of people, mask wearing is safe and effective:

For healthy people, wearing masks during exercise has not been shown to be harmful. However, individuals affected by lung disease, such as asthma or COPD, or heart disease, should be evaluated by a healthcare provider before attempting exercise with any mask.” ***

Also, consider this from the IHRSA:

“New evidence appears to demonstrate that masks do not cause some of the more serious adverse effects including hypercapnia (high blood carbon dioxide) and hypoxia (low blood oxygen levels). Two studies, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sport conducted in healthy adults found that while exercise in a regular mask is generally safe, it does appear riskier to exercise in a very tight, fitted mask, like an N95. Because these studies were conducted in healthy and physically active adults, we do not yet know if there would be a different impact on older people, people with preexisting conditions, or people who are deconditioned to regular exercise.”


Let’s talk about actually using a mask for exercise.

We’ve been rocking masks since March 2020 at Ascendance.

Yay! Okay, so based on the science and data cited above, mask wearing for exercise is safe for most people.

It’s challenging! We’ll come out and say it - Mask wearing during exercise is harder! And definitely not impossible.

  • You might feel a little more exhausted when you wear a mask to work out. You are breathing warmer air when you wear a mask, thus potentially sweating more, which could make you feel hot and tired.

  • You may be getting back into exercise after taking time off and are rebuilding your general stamina. This year has made regular practice harder for us all, and it may take time to get back in shape.

  • Like most new things, wearing a mask while working out takes some getting used to. And just like everything else in pole and aerial, the more you practice the easier it gets!

Here are some suggestions we’ve been practicing, to make mask wearing easier:

  • Start slow and monitor yourself for symptoms of exhaustion, fatigue, or shortness of breathe.

  • Take a moderated approach to exercise intensity - ramp up slowly. Give yourself time for extended cool-down.

  • Choose the right kind of face covering - the fit and material of a face covering can help minimize negative effects. Choose a moisture-wicking material.

  • Change your mask part way through class/practice when your first one starts to get a little damp. You’ll feel refreshed and it will offer better protection.

  • Water Breaks! Don’t forget to stop and hydrate. Sometimes we forget because our faces are covered.

  • Rest more. Listen to your body and take frequent breaks. We encourage stepping outside the studio to remove your mask for a big gulp of air if things are particularly challenging.

  • Give yourself grace.

So, if you’ve been unsure about returning to in-person class because you’re concerned about mask safety, rest assured that while it may be more challenging, mask wearing is safe during exercise. Masks remain our best bet to keep ourselves and each other safe during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Since Community is a cornerstone value at Ascendance, we believe that safety and taking care of each other is paramount, and worth the mild inconvenience.

If you hear internet chatter in favor of not wearing masks, it’s likely coming from misinformation. Some refusals may be disguised with faulty science, but unless a specific medical reason is indicated for an individual, not masking up is really just avoiding inconvenience and discomfort. And to that we say…

You can do hard things. You are, after all, a pole dancer and aerialist!

Yes! We have several X-Poles to have on hand at the Studio, available to rent for 3 month leases. This gives you a low-commitment way to try out having a home pole, while maintaining your pole abilities with online classes. At the end of your lease, you can re-up for another 3 months, return the pole to us, or even opt to purchase it to keep forever.

“But why should I rent a pole when I could just buy my own or wait for the studio to reopen?”

These are great questions, and here are the benefits of this unique program: Renting a pole is an inexpensive and low-commitment way to experiment with a home pole and see if it works for you. If you love it, you can keep renting for a low monthly cost, or even buy the pole at the end of your lease for an additional fee. And if it’s not for you, no biggie! You can return the pole to us at the end of your lease. Another factor to consider is shipping times. Purchasing a pole this year may take weeks or months to arrive, and with the Ascendance Rent-a-Pole Program, we have the equipment available for immediate pickup. Having a pole at home right now allows you the valuable opportunity to take online classes and maintain your skills at home. With the Covid-19 Shutdown still in place for an undetermined amount of time, having a home pole ensures you don’t lose all those hard won tricks and transitions! On January 5, Governor Inslee announced the Healthy Washington - Roadmap to Recovery. Dance, gymnastics, and climbing all count as a low risk sports and are permitted in Phase 1 and can begin as early as Monday 1/11!

We are able to offer Studio Rentals, Private Lessons, and Semi Privates.

While we believe we may also qualify to run group classes (max 5 students) we are still waiting on more clarification from the state and will need some time to organize our instructors and our schedule. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

Ascendance Pole and Aerial Arts, a nonprofit pole studio.  

Wait…A nonprofit pole studio?  

Like pole dancing?  

Yes, you read that right!  You are probably wondering why a nonprofit organization.  The answer is: it all started with community.

The founders of Ascendance came together with an obvious love for aerial arts, but even more so with a love of the community that is found within a pole and aerial arts studio.  As most will tell you, it only takes one class for you to realize this is a great workout.  Similarly, it only takes one class to recognize how uplifting, welcoming, and inclusive the community is.  When Ascendance was dreamed up, we wanted to create a studio that focused on this community.  That enriched the community.  That was the community.  And so it was decided that to best serve the community, we would organize the studio as a nonprofit.  This way all of what we do can be given back to the students, instructors, and community we serve.

Over the past two years, we have worked to create programs that make aerial arts accessible where it was previously out of reach.  We offer classes and workshops geared toward under-represented groups, creating space for students to come together and enjoy who they are free from judgement. We have partnered with our Renton community to take a stand against negativity and to build up other artists and creative thinkers.

Like many other businesses throughout the country and the world, Covid-19 has taken a major toll on our well-being.  The last year has taught many lessons, but overall the biggest is the importance of community through the ups and downs.  How those in our community are strong, encouraging, optimistic, and present for each other.  We have been lucky to remain operating in a limited capacity this year,  and will work tirelessly to continue to do so.  This is where your help comes in! 

On this upcoming Giving Tuesday, we ask that you consider donating to our organization, our community.  We are excited to be partnered with Fractured Atlas, our Fiscal Sponsor, who collects all monetary donations and will provide the necessary tax documentation to you for your donation.

Did you know? Covid-19 also brought about some amazing tax saving opportunities for charitable donations made in 2020.  Due to the greater need for all charitable organizations after the various shutdowns and self-isolations, Congress passed new legislation to assist nonprofit organizations in gathering additional funding.  Not only did they add a deduction potentially available to all individuals for charitable donations up to $300, they also removed the limitation on charitable donations included as itemized deductions.   Of course, you’ll want to talk to your tax advisor about your specific situation, but these new and improved deductions might provide you with some significant tax savings.

In closing, I would like to personally thank this community for giving me the opportunity to work within it.  Thank you for giving me confidence, friendship, grace, and a reason to smile.  Each of you, from student to board member to external community members,  play a special role in helping create the community we have today.  I am so excited to see where our community goes from here.

Creating Space for Freeform Practice


What is Open Pole/Lyra?

Maybe you’re a seasoned poler and used to come to open pole regularly, but Covid-19 threw a wrench in those plans. Maybe you’ve heard of Open Pole/Lyra (or Open Sessions) before but have never attended, or maybe you have no idea what it is. Well we’re here to shed some light on why it’s an important part of your practice.

So what is it? First, Open Sessions are for everyone! It’s a space for students of all levels to create, explore and deepen their mastery of anything they are working on. You may find yourself in the room with peers who have been poling for years at the same time as brand new students just getting started. Simply stated, Open Sessions are time the studio sets aside just for student practice. An instructor will be nearby to answer questions or assist if needed, but the hour is yours to practice on your own, or with a friend or two (socially distanced, of course)!

Why Are Open Sessions Important?

Open Sessions may seem like a simple add-on to your practice that you can take or leave, but it’s actually an important element of successful progressions. Open Sessions provide space just for focusing on your craft without other distractions, and in the presence of other like minded people. Even if you have a home pole, consider adding an Open Session hour to your regular schedule, because the change of environment is excellent for head space, inspiration and potential collaboration. Many students notice that the type of practice they engage in at open pole is different than what they accomplish at home. Open Pole/Lyra is uniquely motivating, energetic and fun. So while practicing at home is also excellent, doing so in studio has additional benefits. And of course, if you have no home pole, that’s all the more reason to come in and practice in addition to your classes.
